How you can learn from MJ, Kobe & Tiger to better your Business and SEO!

Most of you should be familiar with Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods and Kobe Bryant, but what do they have to do with SEO and your business? In short, everything!

If you don’t know their stories, I will give you a quick round down shortly, but all three are stores of Grit and pure determination. Some of you might idolise them and the tremendous success they have achieved, but most of you won’t use these skills in your life or business.

I was a child of the 80s, and Michael Jordan was a huge name in the NBA (National Basketball Association) from the 1980s to the late 1990s, but many people didn’t know his story until recently. Similarly to Michael Jordan, Kobe Byrant is a current NBA all-star champion, and there is always debate in sports bar over who is the Goat (Greatest of all time).

Talent is often thrown around when speaking about any high performing sports star or celebrity. “Wow, they are so talented” or “of course, they are the best; they have natural talent”. But declaring this not only takes away all the hard work, Grit and determination from their stories, but it also kills yours!

Michael Jordans Mindset and Mentality can help you rank

It’s time not Talent

Tiger Woods is another example of someone who is considered the greatest of all time in his field. Again the talent spectre is typically invoked in his name, but do you know how hard each of them worked to get where they are?

His father gave Tiger Woods his first set of golf clubs at the age of 6 months! Now, of course, he didn’t start practising then, but his whole life and environment was golf from a very young age. Tiger was practising 13 hours a day at the peak of his training.

So let’s do the math here to see how much Tiger’s success is from “Talent” or determination. He started training seriously from age 3, and his first professional win was in 1997 at age 22. Let’s assume he took weekends off (Although he probably didn’t), so that would give you 260 Training days a year. Now times that by the 13 hours a day, get us 3,380 hours per year practising his craft. Lastly, times that by the 19 years to his first big win and you get 64,220 hours of training. That’s not talent; that is pure Grit and determination.

Pure Grit and Determination

Kobe and Jordan were both very determined and persistent with their training schedules too. They put in countless hours to achieve their dream and only managed by fervently pursuing them. To quote Michael Jordan, “I’ve missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. Twenty-six times, I’ve been trusted to take the game-winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.”

Look, it isn’t just sport professionals that this applies to! You can insert countless people from J.K. Rowling (The author of the Harry Potter series) to actor Will Smith and so many more. Pure Grit and Determination always wins

The Mindset of Success & SEO

“So what the F does any of this have to do with SEO” I hear you screaming at your screens. Well, more than you think.

I am a Marketing professional, Designer and Developer, and If I have $1 for every client that turns up on my doorstep complaining about no traffic or sales, I could retire with MJ and the rest of them.

It all comes back to your mindset! You became an entrepreneur because you wanted to make money, or have more time, or both or even something completely different. Regardless you have a dream, and you got excited enough about it to start your own business and make a go of it.

So you got to training, didn’t you. You did countless hours of research, developed your product or service, and launched. Your idea was the greatest in your head, it would solve so many issues in your industry, but no one saw it. You paid for some ads on Facebook and Google, thinking I need to get it in front of some eyeballs, and things will start to happen. Nothing again!

Frustration started to set in. Maybe it was all a big mistake, and you might even think it was time to give up on this dream and go back to working for the man. But, if you haven’t tied it all together yet, we are still talking about Grit and Determination.

Not everything Can Be Instant

So much of our world is instant, which has made too many promising entrepreneurs with great ideas give up too early. We are in the age of instant gratification. We no longer have to wait for movies to come out on DVD; there is direct streaming. We no longer have to wait for the right season for fruit; we grow all year round. People don’ have to drive or cook; there is Uber. We run out of milk; our fridges can auto-order it and have it delivered.

Look, I know it’s an easy thing to say, but your mindset around yourself, your capabilities, and your business are what will set you apart in the long run. Now I know I still haven’t mentioned Search Engine Optimisation Yet, but I think you can guess what I mean. No?

Okay, you just launched your website, and now you expect your business to set the world on fire. Your product is so good Google should rank you number one on sheer merit! But, unfortunately, this isn’t how Google or the World works.

Just like MJ, Kobe and Tiger, you need to invest time, effort and money into your website in order to rank. It is that simple. SEO is like a sportsperson in training or your favourite celebrity practising singing or acting. It takes time! This is the biggest thing that so many people get wrong regarding their business and SEO for their website.

Your Options

You have three options after you launch your website.

  1. You do some courses and teach yourself the ins and outs of SEO in all its complexity. (You should read our article on valuing your time)
  2. You do nothing and get the results that come with it.
  3. You pay a professional to optimise your website and do monthly SEO work.

But furthermore, this should be your mentality around every aspect of your life and business. You have to put in the hard yards, the training, the practice and the work to get the results you want.
